HO CHI MINH CITY to VINH LONG to CAN THO
The Mekong River, historically difficult to navigate, divided rather than united nearby peoples. Early settlements date to 2100 BCE, with Ban Chiang representing Iron Age culture. Funan, the first Indianized-Khmer civilization, emerged in the 1st century. By the 5th century, the Khmer Chenla state took over.
The Mekong later became a border between Siam and Tonkin, with Laos and Cambodia caught in the middle. The Portuguese encountered the river in 1540, with European exploration peaking in the 17th century. The French began to colonize the region in the mid-19th century, capturing Saigon in 1861.
