Beginning in the 17th century, Vietnamese settlers gradually isolated the Khmer of the Mekong Delta, turning them into a minority. Prey Nokor, the Khmer's main seaport, was renamed Saigon by the Vietnamese after they took control in 1698.
The area was formally detached from Cambodia and became part of Vietnam. The Mekong Delta was included in South Vietnam in 1954, despite Cambodian protests. In the 1970s, the Khmer Rouge attempted to reclaim the area, leading to the Vietnamese invasion of Cambodia and the fall of the Khmer Rouge.
